Lieutenant Matthew Stapleton

Lieutenant Matthew Stapleton began his career at the Petaluma Police Department in 1988. His prior assignments have included patrol, narcotics and investigations. He has held a number of specialized assignments including SWAT and Field Training Officer. Lieutenant Stapleton was promoted to Sergeant in 1996. In addition to supervising patrol operations, he was Sergeant of the Street Crimes Unit, Traffic and the Investigations Division. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 2007 and is currently Commander of the Administrative Services Division.  The Administrative Services Division includes management of the Records Department, Communications as well as department recruitment, background investigation, training, professional standards and other police personnel functions.

Lieutenant Stapleton graduated from California State University, Sacramento in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He is a 2001 graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisor Leadership Institute and Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society Leadership Development Program.  In 2011 Lieutenant Stapleton graduated from the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Point Leadership Program.
Lieutenant Stapleton serves as an instructor at the Santa Rosa Junior College where he teaches courses for both entry-level and in-service personnel from local, state and federal agencies.  His current teaching assignments include the California P.O.S.T. Supervisory Course, Laws of Arrest, Interview and Interrogation Law and Narcotics Investigation.
