The Community Development Department in Petaluma comprises the Building Division and the Planning Division. The Building Division primarily issues building permits and conducts inspections of buildings, including new and modified buildings, to ensure the safety and protection of property. The Planning Division prepares and updates the overarching planning documents that define and regulate land use in the City, and conducts project and environmental review for proposed projects to ensure consistency with local, State and Federal plans and regulations.
The Community Development Department works closely with other City departments such as Public Works and Utilities, Parks and Recreation to ensure the orderly administration and regulation of development in Petaluma.
The Community Development Department's goal is to provide timely, professional housing, building, engineering and planning services that respond to the needs of the public and result in a safe and balanced community. To meet this goal, we are striving to make as much information as possible available through our online services.

The Community Development Department's public counter hours are:
Planning's hours are 8:00am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-5:00pm Monday through Thursday, closed between 12:00pm -1:00pm
